When should I fertilize my lawn in Oklahoma?

When the grass is actually growing. Bermuda and fescue do not share one calendar.

The short answer

There is not one fertilize date for every lawn in eastern Oklahoma County. Bermuda is a warm-season grass. Feed it after it is greening and growing, not while it is still tan. Fescue grows in cooler weather, often in fall and the milder part of spring. Heat, a dry spell, or a product you already put down can all mean wait.

We work maintained lawns in Choctaw, Midwest City, Spencer, Del City, Newalla, and southeast Oklahoma City. Right now that work is weed control and fertilization only — not aeration, overseeding, mowing, trees, mosquito, or grub programs. A full plan is 6 visits a year. Three of those visits are fertilizing plus spot weed treatment. Fertilizer is not on every visit.

How feeding fits the year

Bermuda

Bermuda feeding belongs after the grass is actively greening. Winter tan is normal dormancy, not a missed feeding. A pale curb strip in summer can be heat or a sprinkler miss. If the lawn is only surviving the heat, that is often a wait. Fertilizer cannot wake turf that is not growing, and weed control and fertilization cannot replace missing water.

Choctaw yards often have a sunny front and more maintained lawn than a compact city lot. The question is still whether the grass you keep is growing. Town notes are on Choctaw lawn treatment.

What to look at before you fertilize

A wide shot and a close-up of the pale or thin spot tell us more than a product name. Note sun, shade, and whether the grass is growing or just sitting there.

Thin grass with exposed soil and scattered dry leaves — **Bare or thin ground** Fertilizer can support living turf. It cannot invent grass where the soil is bare.

Fescue and mixed yards

Fescue gets more attention during cooler growth. Fall can be a fair window when the lawn is moving again after summer. A mild spring can fit too, if the grass is growing and you have not just put something else down. Do not feed a hot, dry fescue lawn on a Bermuda schedule.

Many Midwest City yards mix open sun and house shade on one address. One date will not fit both sides. That split is part of lawn care in Midwest City.

Doing it yourself or hiring it out

Write down the grass type if you know it, which part of the yard is sun or shade, and about when you last fertilized. Skip adding another bag just to tidy the yard before we talk. A recent application changes the next honest window. We will not name a product from this page.

If you hire the work, we are licensed and insured. We confirm the price after we see the yard. Nothing is booked until you agree. Stay off the grass until it is dry. After fertilizing, water within 24–48 hours if you can, and do not mow until the fertilizer has been watered in.
